Marriage and Family: Why Your Christian Walk is boring!

September 19, 2013

Survey 100 Christians and you might discover that many if not the majority are simply bored in their Christian walk.  Now, please know, I'm not sitting in a seat of judgment here, I just wanted to tackle the topic in a quest to answer WHY?  For me, this thought started when I read a quote from Major W. Ian Thomas that said - I know of nothing quite so boring as Christianity without Christ.  When I read this quote, two thoughts came to mind:  First, how many Christians are bored spiritually?  The second thought - how many Christians are living the Christian life apart from Christ.  Honestly, for me, there have been times where I have been guilty of both.  And as I look back at these times, I realize that I've been bored in my Christian walk becasue I've tried to live the Christian life in my own energy. So today, I want to suggest 3 reasons Why Your Christian Walk is boring! Galatians 3:1-3 (amp) says:

"O you poor and silly and thoughtless and unreflecting and senseless Galatians! Who has fascinated or bewitched or cast a spell over you, unto whom—right before your very eyes—Jesus Christ (the Messiah) was openly and graphically set forth and portrayed as crucified? Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the [Holy] Spirit as the result of obeying the Law and doing its works, or was it by hearing [the message of the Gospel] and believing [it]? [Was it from observing a law of rituals or from a message of faith?] Are you so foolish and so senseless and so silly? Having begun [your new life spiritually] with the [Holy] Spirit, are you now reaching perfection [by dependence] on the flesh?"

First, a boring Christian walk happens because in our busy, day to day lives (even doing good "churchy" and "ministry" things) it is easy to FORGET who Jesus is, what Jesus did!  If you want to bring some passion back to your walk with Christ, then today, remember Who Jesus is and what Jesus did for you.  Remember your first love, the heights from which you have fallen, repent and return to HIM.

Second, a boring Christian walk happens because we have FORGOTTEN that the Holy Spirit indwells us.  I asked my small group last week this question:  In 2013 why is it important to remember that Christ ascended and the Holy Spirit was imparted to Christians.  The anwer: so that we could live with power and purpose right now.  You see, as a born again, Christ follower, you are indwelled with the 3rd person of the trinity.  The PERSON of the Holy Spirit is now living inside you. But if you have forgotten or maybe never even gotten this truth for your Christian life, the chances are you are bored.  But when you recognize the Holy Spirit is alive, active, leading, guiding, comforting, and directing your life every day will be an exciting journey.  You will wake up with anticipation to see what HE shows you as you surrender to HIS leadership.

Third, a boring Christian walk happen because we are trying to live it in our own energies, in our own flesh, accomplishment, talents and abilities. To me, there is a difference between Christianlike and Christlike, religious activity versus spiritual intimacy and great theology that never meets your reality.

Here's the take-away from today's blog: The Christian life is never boring when it is lived through the indwelled life of Christ.

What I mean is the secret to living an exciting Christian life is found through the indwelling presence of Christ in your every day life.  Non bored Christians have realized that the Christian life is the life of Christ, lived through the Holy Spirit, to accomplish what Christ started two thousand years ago. Non bored Christians live each day with the awareness and fullness of Christ living inside them. They are more concerned with being Christlike than Christianlike.  They are living in the sheer joy of allowing Christ to be GOD in all of their circumances, struggles, challenges, failures and experiences.  HIS passion and purpose become their passion and purpose as the life of Christ is now being lived by HIM in them and through them...which is never boring!

Is your Christian life boring?  I hope not!  But if you've found yourself in the doldrums and a bit bored...remember the wonderful gift of the indwelling presence of Christ.
