Marriage and Family: Mary's Response to ChristmasDecember 04, 2012
Our last blog looked at Joseph's response to Christmas, this one looks at how Mary, the mother of our Savior, responds to Christmas. When the angel Gabriel spoke to her, he said: “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” It is here, in these words from Gabriel, that we will find out how to respond to Christmas.
The Birth of Jesus Foretold (Luke 1:26-38)
In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
These words "highly favored" mean having been muched graced by God. It speaks of the divine influence upon the heart that is now reflected in the life. In other words, God knew Mary's heart. He knew her heart and her lifestyle matched. And so, HE found her "highly favored" with much of HIS GRACE. Grace that would be needed to raise HIS Son. The angel then tells her how this will be! He says the "power of the Most High will overshadow you." Meaning, the divive power of God will cover you Mary. What a beautiful reminder to all of us today. If we have been saved by God, received the wonderful gift of HIS grace. We now live under HIS covering.
Dear friend, Christmas has afforded us two amazing things: the Grace of God and the covering of God.
When we think of the over-shadowing of God's grace, we are reminded, first of all of God's awesomeness. The fact that HE would wrap himself in flesh and leave the Glory of Heaven, taking the very nature of a saving servant, is nothing short of awesome. Second, we are reminded of God's Authority. Only God"s Authority, could solve our sin problem. It would take the sinless life of Christ, coming with full authority by God, in grace and truth to save our souls. Lastly, we are reminded of God's Ability. Remember, God's overshadowing grace gives peace, power and purpose. The angel told Mary: "for nothing is impossible with God."
So, how does Mary respond to the overshadowing of God' grace. In response to God's awesomeness - she worships! In response to God's authority - she surrenders! In response to God's ability - she serves!
This is the response we hope you have to Christmas this year. Worship the Messiah, your King of Kings! Surrender more of your life to HIM, give HIM every ounce of who you are! Serve HIM with all of your heart...then may it be said of you, what was said of Mary...that you are HIGHLY FAVORED...being MUCH GRACED by the divine influence of God upon your heart that is being reflected in your life! How will you respond to Christmas?
