Marriage and Family: Thankful No Matter What!November 21, 2012
I know this time of year comes with all kinds of emotions and memories. Just because we are celebrating "Happy Thanksgiving" does not mean all of our circumstances are "happy." For some, the challenge witll be to be THANKFUL NO MATTER WHAT. This blog is dedicated to you. And to others who also need to be reminded of how to be thankful in all circumstances. In fact, this blog will help you every time your life gets heavy and burdened because of what you are facing.
The Apostle Paul gives us a secret to this when he wrote in Philippians 4:12-13
"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learnedthe secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him whogives me strength"
I am in no way making light of the difficulties that so many find themselves facing today. Broken relaationships, lossed loved ones, uncertain futures, financial stress, rejection, burn-out, stress, and much more can be so very heavy and so very hurtful. Yet, in this passage Paul reminds me and hopefully you...that as follower of Christ, we really can be Thankful No Matter What!
How? Turn your gaze toward Christ. Remember, Christ promised to never leave us. Christ promised to go with us. Christ promised to also lead us. Something supernatural really does happen when we turn our gaze and remember who Christ is, what Christ promised and through HIM and HIS strength we can do everything. It's the words to the old HYMN ..."Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in HIS wonderful face and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of HIS glory and grace."
Here are four ways you can be Thankful No Matter What:
1. Remember your citizenship is in Heaven... As a follower of Christ, this is not your final home. There is trouble in this world...but you are resident of a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. Scripture says: "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful" (Heb. 12:28)
2. Start to Worship. Turn on some of your favorite worship songs, enter into the presence of God. Worship changes your view from your situation to God's sovereignty as you enter HIS throne room. Scriptures say: "and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.” (Heb. 12:28)
3. Dig into God's Word. God's word must be your basis of truth. So God's Word as your weapon and with worship on your lips...be Thankful No Matter What! God's Word is full of promises for you. Promises like: I know the plans I have for you...plans to prosper you...plans for your future which is full of hope. Scriptures say: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." (Col 3:16)
4. Pray. Tell God how you feel both the good and the bad. But also, listen to HIM. Let HIS Holy Spirit comfort you. Let HIM remind you of his goodness, his provision,his love, grace and mercy. Colossians 4:2 says: "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."
Friend, because your citizenship is not here, because the Word of God does not dissappoint, because being in God's presence changes your perspective and because prayer lifts your head you really can be Thankful No Matter What!
