Marriage and Family: Pray for a Post Election Perspective

November 07, 2012

This by no means is a political blog post.  I simply wanted to give you some post election perspectives.  There are so many opinions on so many topics, many of them personally and emotionally charged.  I thought I would share a challenge to pray for a post election perspective...perhaps it will help you...I would love to hear your comments

First, my perspective changed this morning as I did what I try to do at the beginning of every day.  PRAY FIRST.

Then, as I turned on my computer, this verse was the verse of the day:

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”

Simply living this verse today has changed my Post Election Perspective. Here's how

1.  Prayer changes our hearts for people and problems (and politicians).  As my Pastor says:  Pray First.  I heard it said once: it's hard to fight with someone and have anger in your heart for someone if you diligently pray for them.  God by HIS Spirit softens us when we pray, it's just a fact.  So PRAY FIRST

2.  PRAYER and PEACE.  If you are worried - PRAY.  Prayer and Peace go hand in hand.  Prayer puts you in God's presence as your true source of peace.  In the midst of trials and tribulations (that Christ warned us about), we can still live in peace because we know God's got this.  We may not know how things will turn out, we may not know why things happen..but we can a;ways know peace because God's got this...and because he does we can agree with Paul in Phillipians 4:6-7

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

3.  PRAYER and HOLINESS.  Pray first, pray and receive peace, but also pray for Godliness and Holiness.  We, all of us, like never before need to be called back to Godliness and Holiness.  When I read this part of the verse above, I thought:  what do my prayers look like?  Are they selfish?  Have I been praying for relief from my circumstances?  Do I spend more time asking God for what I want and the way I want it to happen?  Do I spend more time asking from him than I do listening to him?  Today, I want to challenge you to simply start praying for more of God's presence!  Start praying for godliness in your life!  Ask him to develop holiness in you!  This is what we all need:  more godliness, more holiness, and more presence of God in our lives.  We need this for our marriages, our children, our frienships, our churches, our cities, counties, states, nation and world!

The bottom line, praying these two scriptures has changed my post election perspective.  Today, I have decided to pray first, pray and receive peace, and pray for more Godliness and Holiness in our world...how about you...instead of worrying about all the stuff that burdens us all...why not stop right now and simply turn your focus toward Christ, seek HIS FACE, receive HIS Presence and Peace...pursue godlines and holiness for your life and help those around you find it as well...

I believe, if you keep this as your focus, your post election perspective will change....

I believe disappointments reveal character instead of create it. As I watched some comment (and even include their children), it occurred to me that maybe God didn't want to propagate that kind of heart..Prodigal God by Tim Keller explains well how both the religious and irreligious can be alienated from God. Stormy Omartian also does a great job of uniting and strengthening the Christian heart with prayer in Powerful Prayers for troubled Times formerly titled (Power of the Praying Nation).

You are absolutely correct and I must admit that my first reaction was not hoiliness yesterday. After praying, really whining, to God I realized that maybe God's choice of leadership for our nation is to bring our focus back to Him. We need to be focused on Him now more than ever and I am certain that we will have to depend on Him more in the days and time to come. I think this awakening shows us that we need to depend and surrender to our one true leader - Our Lord, Jesus Himself.
