Marriage and Family: Demi Lovato and Skyscraper

August 20, 2011

Skyscraper by Demi Lovato

Today is my birthday, and I am not thinking of myself today, but about a girl who shares my birth date, Demi Lovato. Some may know of her and some may not, but I was introduced to her by my daughter, Jorja, who fell in love with her voice, her music, and her heart. Jorja followed her tweets and saw where she really liked Bethany Dillion, a Christian artist my daughter also liked, and also where Demi was reading the book “Captivating” by Stasi Eldridge, another book she was very fond of. The more I heard about this beautiful, winsome, ultra-talented young lady, I was more and more endeared to her, and was so hopeful of the positive impact she would make on the young ladies in America, as she had been raised up with that potential influence.

For the next several months I watched as critics and paparazzi publicized her every move, leaving her extremely open and vulnerable to public scrutiny and attacks. Every inch of Demi was scrutinized, questioned, judged, criticized, and twisted. As a result, she found herself at a place of deep, emotional woundedness that many of us will never face in a lifetime. And as any of us would do, Demi had to find ways to cope with what was being hurled at her. She sought out anything that would best numb the pain, finding herself amidst an eating disorder, and self-destructive cutting.

When any of us are hurt, we become angry with those who wound us, especially when unwarranted. Because we are not supposed to retaliate in anger, we have to stuff our emotions, which causes great bitterness within us, and results in either a greater effort to perform for their approval or quit and self-destruct. This is the road Demi chose. Since then, she has had to work through all of this in the public eye. Imagine that for just a minute. Could you have handled all of this? Fame? Gossip? Slander? Mis-portrayal? Brutal, verbal assaults? And so, again, in the public eye, Demi has had to face her choices, and work really hard to overcome and rise up from the ashes a victor.

She came back with a debut song called “Skyscraper”. Read the lyrics below:

Skies are crying

I am watching

Catching teardrops in my hands

Only silence as it's ending, like we never had a chance

Do you have to, make me feel like there is nothing left of me?

You can take everything I have

You can break everything I am

Like I'm made of glass

Like I'm made of paper

Go on and try to tear me down

I will be rising from the ground

Like a skyscraper!

Like a skyscraper!

As the smoke clears

I awaken, and untangle you from me

Would it make you, feel better to watch me while I bleed?

All my windows, still are broken

But I'm standing on my feet

You can take everything I have

You can break everything I am

Like I'm made of glass

Like I'm made of paper

Go on and try to tear me down

I will be rising from the ground

Like a skyscraper!

Like a skyscraper!

Go run, run, run

I'm gonna stay right here

Watch you disappear, yeah

Go run, run, run

Yeah it's a long way down

But I am closer to the clouds up here

You can take everything I have

You can break everything I am

Like I'm made of glass

Like I'm made of paper, Oh

Go on and try to tear me down

I will be rising from the ground

Like a skyscraper!

Now, I know nothing about Demi Lovato’s past, present, or future, but I can tell you what I believe. I believe that God created her with incredible musical talent and raised her up to be a powerful, Godly impact on young ladies. I also believe that satan was aware of that plan, and set in motion his plan to take her out. He sent out the demons with the big guns to attack her and annihilate her….and he almost succeeded. But you see, there is a God who is greater than anything we could ever face or anything the enemy could ever throw at us! God says we are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ! (Romans 8:37)

So reread and rethink the lyrics to her song and think of it like this:

Everything hit her so fast and hurt her so badly that she and God never had a chance. So she turns to the enemy and responds to his accusations and attacks, telling him that she will overcome. As things go from foggy to clear, she begins to slowly get untangled from the web of satan’s deception. While satan may have taken pot-shots at her house, her foundation in Jesus Christ stood strong. Then, she rebukes the enemy and tells him to disappear back to hell where he belongs, because she’s rising out of this and will be better, stronger, and more powerful and influential than she’s ever been for the glory of God.

Friends, this is the testimony of many of us, except we didn’t have to go through our mess in front of everybody else.

Demi Lovato has overcome great obstacles that have threatened to ruin her. She has shown people all over the world that there is no pit so deep that God is not there to rescue, heal, and mend. Whereas so many teenage stars our children have pedestaled have proven to disillusion and disappoint us with their foolish choices and behavior, I am here to tell you that I have the utmost respect and honor for Demi Lovato. I believe that she has done our children a favor to show them how hard life is, how easy it is to be caught off guard and taken under, and how hard but worth-it it is to fight back.

So Demi, I don’t know if you will ever read a note written by a simple follower of Jesus Christ, but I want you to know that I applaud you. I think you are beautiful. I think God smiled when you were born and His plans for you, He has not removed or revoked. You are deeply and dearly loved by God and so many others. And I just hope that today, you will sense His pleasure and joy in who you are and all that He has in store for you as you walk a fresh and anew with Him. Use the platform God has given you to help others get free from the entanglement of the enemy. It’s why He made you….for such a time as this. Rise above it all, Demi, and go fly high like a skyscraper! Rest in knowing that your Father is so proud of you, and may you have the happiest of birthdays yet!

I love this! Satan is terrified of Gods women because of their power! Praise God that He's raising her up again to live out His awesome plan for her!

just read this today and it was an encouragement to me because I know what it's like to have satan try to take you down, but by the grace of God you are able to rise above it. My mess - God's message!
