Marriage and Family: Soul Surfer and Trusting GodAugust 03, 2011
Last night we watched the movie "Soul Surfer." The real life story of surfer, Bethany Hamilton and her relentless comeback from a tragic accident where her arm was bitten off by a shark. There is a scene in the movie where she asked Carrie Underwood, who had the role of her Bible study leader "Why did God allow this to happen?" Have you ever ask that question? When life makes no sense, how do you trust God in the midst of it? It's not easy, but there are 4 ways that God calls us to trust...Let's start with Psalm 9:10
"Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you."
There is such comfort in names of God. He is our provider, our shelter, our healer. He is our redeemer and our friend. He is GOD WITH US...the I AM all you need God. But did you also notice that we have a part to play in activating our trust? How you might ask? The answer, is in the "knowing" God and the "seeking" God that you fortify your trust. The word "know" here in Psalm 9 means to know by experience, to be acquanted with. It means to have "intimacy" with God. We have never and you will never be forsaken when you have intimacy with the Father. You may be facing the most difficult time in your life, but if you will seek Christ and place yourself in the lap of HIS love, pursuing a face to face intimacy with HIM by reading HIS Word, praying and being around HIS people, your load will be lighter. We know, there are times that life makes absolutely no sense, but in these times, perhaps, especially in these times, we need to be reminded of the four ways God's word tells us to trust HIM.
First, Trust God at all times, not just when you feel like it, not when you have it figured out, but at ALL TIMES. Psalm 62:8 says: Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
Second, Trust God through his INFALLIABLE WORD. In the midst of a messed up day, you better get to the Word of God and ask HIM to show you HIS perspective, HIS plan, HIS purpose. Ask God to show you what HE wants you to learn through the situation you are facing. Psalm 119:114 says: You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
Third, Trust God because of his UNFAILING LOVE. You may not be able to make sense of everything, but the one thing you can count on is the Love of God. Rest in it, depend upon it, cherish it! Psalm 119:76 reminds us: May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant.
Lastly, Trust God with your WHOLE HEART. Don't try to take care of your life and your circumstances on your own. Lean on God to help you through! One of the most common passages is Proverbs 3:5-6. Commonly known and commonly forgotten. Today, no matter what you are facing...Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Good word, Jena! I just preached to my soldiers this weekend on faith (trust), hope, & love so this was a great continuation of the thoughts God had placed on my heart as well!
