Marriage and Family: Parenting - 7 ways to lead your family (Part 6)

December 01, 2010

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matt. 19:14)

This is an amazing passage of Scripture because Jesus Christ shows us how valuable Children are to Him.  With all the places He had to go, all the people He had to see, all the ministry He had to do, Christ was never too busy for Children.  What about you mom and dad, have you found yourself too busy for your Children.  In all the chasing after the trinkets of this world, it is very easy to become disconnected from our children.  It's easy to be consumed by the challenges of each day and the "to do list" for tomorrow.  Parents around this country make enormous investments of time, energy and effort into so many things...but what about the emotional investment in their kids.  Mom and Dad...they don't need stuff...they need YOU!

The truth is this...the more disconnected and disengaged the parent is in the life of the child...the more trouble they will have.  We have seen it over and over again where a parent has allowed the trappings of this world to take their family.  We cannot tell you the number of parents we have talked to over the years that found themselves disconnected with their kids and consequently are now dealing with serious issues with their children.  That's why Christ shows us that we MUST slow down and get engaged in the lives of our kids.

Mom and Dad as Parent Investors invest first and foremost TIME with their kids...they guard and protect their time with their kids.  They set boundaries with the amount of time they allow their kids to be sucked into and wrapped up by facebook, texting, I-phones with forever earplugs in their ears and fingers that never stop playing games or mashing a keyboard of some sort.  For fun...just test this out...the next time you are in a restaurant watch the families around you.  Or even when you pull up beside someone in the car with kids in the back...see if they are talking or texting? social networking is definately not social....it's sad to say and sad to see, but we are raising an entire generation of kids that do not know how to have a meaningful, face to face, deep relational conversation with someone else....

So let's answer a few questions and see if you are a Parent Investor....

  • How many of you allow your kids to bring their cell phone to the dinner table? (that is if you still eat at the dinner table togther and not in front of the TV)
  • When was the last time you had a game night?
  • When was the last time you went for a walk or road bikes with your kids?
  • Dad's, when was the last time you took your daughter on a date or mom's your son?

The fact of the matter is this, there are tremendous distractions facing the american family and it's connection between parents and kids...Perhaps its time we changed all of this and started leading our families as Parent Investors.  Start by slowing down and really engaging your kids.  Start asking them questions, start having face to face, meaninghful and deep conversations with them.  Start investing TIME, WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT, AFFIRMATION, HUGS AND SMILES. Go to the park with your kids, take them on a picnic or hike, find a family project to do together, take a road-trip, go to dinner, and as you do all this ... turn the phones off or leave them in the car and give them the best investment you can...yourself...your wisdom...your love...your care...and when you do...you will do as Christ did...you will bless them!

fully surrendered,

Dale and Jena
