Marriage and Family: Parenting - 7 ways to lead your family (Part 2)

November 02, 2010
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10)

"Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."( John 6:35)

In these two passages, Jesus is giving us some incredible personal advice and some awesome parenting advice. Christ knows that this world in which we live is always feeding our souls. Just think about the way this world feeds our thoughts, our feelings and our decisions. This world drives so much of how we respond and how we process our lives. We let the lies of this world feed our soul, looking to it to tell us who we are and what we are about. And when we do, we do the same thing the Prophet Jeremiah proclaimed in Jeremiah 2:13 - “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. No wonder our homes and families are so broken...we are going to the wrong place for our bread and water!
This is why the 2nd way to lead your children is by leading them through feeding them!
No, not happy meals and not a bunch of worldly stuff...but feeding their souls with the things of God! Parents who are LEADER - FEEDERS know it is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL that they feed the souls of their children with the Bread of Life and Living Water! They know if they don't, this world will feed them something else...
Here are 10 things we think Parents need to do if they are going to be "Leader Feeders" for their children:
1. They have their radar on and boundaries set for what they allow into their lives and the lives of their children.
2. They are actively and daily engaged in the lives of their kids
3. They pay specific attention to what their children listen to, watch on TV and participate in through social networking
4. They know who their kids run with and what they do
5. They freely speak of the things of God in their own lives and how God is working so that their children will be able to see a God who is active and alive
6. They create a culture in their home where Christ is elevated and the world is filtered
7. They open the scriptures and pray with their kids consistently and often
8. They have a biblical world-view by showing their kids what the Bible says about ALL issues
9. They treat their spouse with love and respect because they understand they are the model that their kids will follow
10. They feed their soul in order to feed the soul of their children...remember, you can't give away what you don't possess!
Moses definitely got it right in Deuteronomy 6 when he wrote:
"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates."
Let's face it mom and dad, it may not be popular or culturally relevant to have high standards and strong boundaries. You may not get to do certain things, go certain places, watch certain movies and much more...but you have to decide if you want to be culturally relevant and popular or Holy and Righteous.
Also, it's not our Churches job, the Pastors Job, the Youth worker or Bible study teachers job to raise Godly kids...it's ours....and if we don't feed their souls...then this world will...so have a Deuteronomy 6 plan for your family...let the things of God become a natural part of your home...talk about them, impress them when you sit, when to you walk, when you lie down, when you get up...in other words as you live...let Christ become a natural daily part of your life and home...as natural as breathing ...and when you do...you will be parents who are LEADER FEEDERS
fully surrendered,
