Marriage and Family: Making Room for Relationships

October 30, 2015

Fall is here, Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming and for many, it's time to put up the summer clothes and get out the winter. Which means, I (Jena) have to take a day to make room for my sweaters, jackets, etc. Every time I do this, I find clothes that I haven't worn for years but I keep them thinking they will either come back in style or, who knows, I may just need them at some point in the future. The problem is, if I don't purge  my closet, all I do is create more clutter and the opportunity for me to get frustrated every time I try to pull something off the rack.

As I set aside one day to make room for my winter clothes, I am reminded to ask myself the question, "Am I setting aside the time I need for my relationship with God and my other relationships?" Which leads me to wonder, "Is my life like my closet, too cluttered with other things that need to be purged so I can give the time necessary to nourish my relationship with God and others?" Which leads to, "When I don't make room for God and others, am I unintentionally communicating to them that they are not important to me?"

I've heard it said that an unevaluated life is a wasted one. Would you take a moment to evaluate your life? Are you like the innkeeper who told Mary and Joseph that he had no room for them? Has Jesus been standing at
the door knocking and saying, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone will open the door I will come in and sup with him and he with Me." Is your spouse, are your friends or your kids knocking and you need to open the door and make room for them?

As we head into the crazy holiday season, the challenge will be to not get so busy with all the "to do's" that you miss the joy of just being with the Lord and your friends and family. So, just like I've cleaned out my closet, start now before the crazy schedules take over, and make a conscious effort to make room for God and the important people in your life.
