Marriage and Family: Spiritual Fatigue and grasping for air

November 14, 2013

So our family started a new work out program called T25.  Let me just say, while we love it, it has been hard.  It is 25 minutes of non-stop exercise.  By the time we are done, we are fatigued and grasping for air.  I think sometimes this also happens to us spiritually. Let's face it, spiritual fatigue happens to all of us.  There are just days were things are just not clicking spiritually.  Your prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling back into your lap, God seems silent, the scriptures seem dry and your relationships feel less than fulfilling and passionate.  The point is not if these days happen, but when these days happen what should we do in response?  Well in the T25 work-out, they always wrap up the video with some recovery time.  The purpose is to slow down, soften your breath and relax.  I think the same holds true for spiritual recovery.  Your busyness, burdens, over-loaded schedules, constantly pouring out, worry, stress can create spiritual fatigue in your life.  You can become so focused on your "stuff" that you loose focus on "Christ."  We say it like this....as Christ followers, we should "glance at our problems and gaze at Christ, not gaze at our problems and glance at Christ."  This is what it means to slow down, soften your breath and relax into Christ.

We have also found that one of the best ways to move out of spiritual fatigue is to focus on God's grace.  Grace that is sufficient for whatever you face.  Just today, I heard the song by Matt Redman "Your Grace Finds Me!"  What an amazing title...to think that the Grace of Christ finds us.  In the middle of whatever we are facing, in the midst of all of our schedules, worry, over-loaded, spiritually fatigued lives, God's Grace is fully available to us.  I've pasted a part of the lyrics to the song below...

So I'm breathing in Your grace
And I'm breathing out Your praise
I'm breathing in Your grace
Forever I'll be
Breathing in Your grace
And I'm breathing out Your praise
I'm breathing in Your grace
Forever I'll be
Breathing in Your grace
And I'm breathing out Your praise
Breathing in Your grace
For our God, for our God

Yes, Your grace finds me
Yes, Your grace finds me

Did you see the wonderful answer....when we breathe in HIS GRACE...we also breathe out HIS PRAISE.  Therein lies the secret, when you are spiritually fatigued and grasping for air, start breathing in the Grace of Christ and breathe out some praise.  There is something very invogorating when we do this.  So if you are spiritually fatigued today, or on the days you find yourself there, start breathing in HIS grace and start breathing out some praise to the Lord for who HE is, His faithfulness, His goodness, His promises!  I really believe your spiritual fatigue will begin to lift as Christ lifts your soul.
